The index can range from -3 (a patient with severe pain receiving no analgesic drug) to +3 (a patient receiving strong opioids and reporting no pain). Negative scores indicate inadequate orders for analgesic drugs, and score of 0 and higher are considered indicators of acceptable treatment.
